Comics I bought 3/29/06

An early afternoon trip to the comic shop this week. I bought three regulars: Usagi Yojimbo 92, Savage Dragon 124, The Walking Dead 27 and one new one: Red Prophet Tales of Alvin Maker. Red Prophet looks like some historical fiction so that is up my alley.

I give a thumbs up to last weeks trade of "Deep Sleeper" by Hester and Huddleston. It is the story of a guy who discovers he can travel on the astral plane and there are some bad things hanging out there. Not great but a solid story and solid art.

-Oh no! Supes has been without his powers for the past year! Will he get them back in time for the movie premiere? Uh...yes.
    The Walking Dead 27
    New Avengers Illuminati 1
-Thankfully not another "everything you know is wrong" story. More like: "What If A Bunch of Super Guys Had Their Own Show on Fox News?"
    Invincible 30
-A typical yet not typical fun super hero book. Written by Robert Kirkman who also does The Walking Dead.
    Captain America 65th Anniversary Special
    Fallen Angel 4
-good book but I still prefer Peter David when he's funny
    -Uncanny X-Men 471
-suprisingly coherent writing from Claremont these days
    Thing 5
-I've really liked Dan Slott's writing too. He's also been writing She-Hulk
    Superman/Batman 24
    FF 536
    Green Lantern 10
    Blue Beetle
-I bet Giffen lasts no more than 5 issues before he leaves the book
    Ultimate Spidey 92
Marvel Visionaries Peter David's Hulk Volume 2
-completes my collection of his Hulk stories from when he WAS funny

  • Oooo... Mocking John for his lack of posting. I bet that stings.

    So there.
    Homos.

Since I missed last week, I'll do 2 weeks worth:

    Fallen Angel #4
Good book. Peter David can write like a muthafukka.

    Lucifer #72
This is one of those books I keep buying simply because I have the whole run in one form or another. It's just not good anymore. In this issue, Lucifer bones some hot Japanese lady demon, then decides to quit. She gets sort of pregnant, but not really, then bathes in molten gold. Or something. I'm not entirely sure. Don't really care, either.

    Rex Mundi #17
Good book. Good story. The church is evil. I can get with that.

    Hellblazer #218
Hellblazer can be really good or really asstastic depending on the story arc. It's in a good arc at the moment. Yay.

    The 13th Son #4
Decent Kelly Jones horror comic. Not as good as "Supernatural Freak Machine", but worth checking out.

Supergirl and the Legion Of Superheroes #16
Well done superhero book. Doesn't take itself too seriously and Supergirl's wearing a belly shirt. I would've loved that when I was 10 yrs old.

    Conan: Book of Thoth #1
More good Kelly Jones art. The title character is, unfortunately, so one-dimensionally evil that it gets kind of boring. And he has the same name as a retarded, shitty play I once saw.

    Superman & Batman #??
Worlds Finest was cool when I was a kid. At least it seemed that way to me. Now I just sit there wondering why Superman even bothers hanging with Batman. I mean, here's a guy who could conceivably extinguish the sun and knock the Earth out of orbit and he's spending time with an anti-social loon who beats up muggers. Can you say out of his league?

Star Wars: Tag & Blink #1
Out of nostalgia and loyalty to the brand, every now and then I pick up a Star Wars comic. I'm always disappointed. Why do Star Wars comics generally suck? Why? This wasn't the worst one I've ever read, but that's still like being the best hockey team in Mexico. Issue 2 is not in my life plans.

    Jeremiah Harm #2
I missed #1 and I'm bummed about it. This is a darn good book. Intergalactic bounty hunter chasing genocidal, maneating aliens to earth. Cynical fun ensues. Check it out! It's one of my new regular must-buy books! As such, I'm sure it will be cancelled next month.

    The Walking Dead #17
Our heroes discover EVIL TOWN (say it slowly with a low, ominous voice). Still not lighthearted and funny, like all end-of-civilization books should be, but I like it anyway.

Rob Sucks and His Underwear's Too Tight #237
The title explains it all. Uncomfortableness and sweaty testicles ensue.

    :)
